As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2025, the streets of Seattle transformed into a ghost town where Bebop Waffle Shop used to stand. The once-thriving small business was forced to close its doors, becoming a casualty of the city’s newest minimum wage law, which hiked wages up to an unprecedented $20.76 per hour. But what’s even more startling than the shop’s demise is the owner’s strange admission: she still supports the law that put her out of business.
In an interview with KCPQ-TV, the owner, Corina Luckenbach, expressed her devastation at the closure. “This is financially just not going to make sense anymore,” she said. “Because, just for me, the increase would cost me $32,000 more dollars a year.”
But while Luckenbach laments the lost of her “safe space for queer people”, she cannot bring herself to condemn the very political ideology that dealt her a crippling blow. In fact, she proudly stands by her support for the minimum wage hike, telling KCPQ that she believes employees deserve to be paid more.
The reality is, Donald Trump was not the one who put her employees out of work. The leftist lawmakers in Seattle, who appear to agree with her politics, were the ones who put her employees out of work. This is a classic example of progressive policies: they may have a cloak of compassion and empathy, but they often end up hurting the very people they claim to be helping.
With the city’s new minimum wage law, Luckenbach simply cannot afford to keep her business afloat. She may have been more concerned about the nation’s capital instead of her own city, but the consequences remain the same: her employees are out of work and her once-thriving business has become another statistic in the progressive agenda.
One can only hope that Corina Luckenbach will finally recognize the harm that these leftist policies cause and reconsider her support for them. Perhaps she may even waffle on her stance and join the side that supports small businesses and economic growth.
