During Monday’s episode of “The View,” co-host Sara Haines gave Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz an opportunity to address criticisms of Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent appearance on the program. Harris came under fire after saying “nothing comes to mind” when asked about what she would do differently from President Joe Biden if elected.
Haines posed a similar question to Walz, asking if he could point to a policy decision that he and Harris would handle differently from Biden. In response, Walz mentioned the expansion of Medicare and the need to focus on fixing the economy, as well as protecting access to healthcare for seniors. He also praised Harris as a “new leader” who will bring a “new way forward” if elected.
However, Walz’s attempt to deflect criticism of Harris and Biden falls flat. The fact that he struggled to come up with a single policy that he and Harris would handle differently from Biden only reinforces the notion that Harris is simply echoing Biden’s policies and lacks the conviction and independence to lead.
Harris herself exemplified this lack of leadership during her appearance on “The View” last Friday, when she was unable to name a single policy she would do differently from Biden. When pressed by NBC reporter Peter Alexander, she resorted to talking points about expanding Medicare and providing down payment assistance for first-time home buyers. This lack of original thought and clear policy differences only reinforces the idea that Harris is simply a puppet for the Biden administration.
Furthermore, Walz’s claims that Harris will bring change and a new way forward are completely unsupported. Under the Biden administration, the country is facing high inflation and an unstable economy. Only 28% of Americans believe the country is on the right track, according to a recent CNN poll. If Harris and Walz truly represented change and a new direction, these numbers would be much higher.
This attempt to rebrand Harris as a change candidate is also evident in anonymous advisers’ comments to Axios in August. They stated that Harris intended to create a distance between herself and Biden’s policies, particularly on the economy and inflation. This strategy clearly shows a lack of confidence in Biden’s leadership and an attempt to distance herself from the failures of the current administration.
It is clear that Harris is not a strong or independent leader. Her inability to differentiate herself from Biden and her reliance on talking points instead of concrete policy ideas only reinforce the idea that she is simply following the party line. And while Walz may argue otherwise, the American people are not convinced that a Biden-Harris ticket will bring the change and new direction that the country so desperately needs.
