During former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s book tour at the Central Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, she may have violated an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rule prohibiting nonprofits from engaging in political activity. Republican Maryland Rep. Andy Harris wrote a letter to the Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, stating that Pelosi’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris during the appearance was a clear violation.
Pelosi’s statements during the event left no room for interpretation. She openly endorsed Kamala Harris for president, saying, “Kamala Harris should be elected president of the United States because she is the best person for the job.” This was clearly a campaign stop for Harris, despite the event being promoted as a book tour for Pelosi’s new book, “The Art of Power.”
What was even more concerning is that Pelosi used the event to criticize former President Donald Trump. She went as far as to claim that the events of January 6, 2021, were an “insurrection incited by the president of the United States.” This blatant attack on Trump only further proves that this was a political event, not a book tour.
The Pratt Free Library, as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization, is prohibited from engaging in political activity, according to the IRS. The IRS makes it clear on their website that “contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office” are strictly prohibited. Yet, Pelosi seemed to disregard this rule and continue to endorse and campaign for Harris during the event.
Pelosi even appeared to realize her mistake at one point, saying, “I didn’t know we could talk politics.” This admission only adds to the evidence that this was an intentional violation of the IRS rule. As a public official and a nonprofit organization, both Pelosi and the Pratt Library should have known that endorsing and campaigning for presidential candidates is prohibited activity.
Why is Nancy Pelosi campaigning for presidential candidates at a nonprofit organization such as the Pratt Free Library in Baltimore?
There is supposed to be an IRS regulation that prohibits nonprofit organizations from engaging in elections.

Rep. Harris was quick to call out Pelosi and the library for their actions. In his letter to the Chairman, he stated, “Endorsing and campaigning for presidential candidates at nonprofit organizations is prohibited activity.” He also called for an update on the current tax-exempt status of the library.

It is upsetting to see Pelosi blatantly disregard the rules and use a nonprofit organization for her own political gain. This is just another example of the partisan divide in our country and an abuse of power by the Democratic party. As a supporter of Trump, it is concerning to see how far some politicians will go to attack him and further their own agenda. Pelosi’s actions have not gone unnoticed, and it is time for her to be held accountable for her violation of the IRS rule.
