In a shocking development, the hosts of “Fox & Friends” found themselves, against all odds, agreeing with Democratic governors on an issue. The matter in question was the decision by New York Governor Kathy Hochul to sign legislation aimed at combating social media addiction among minors, and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s push to ban mobile phones in schools.
“Let’s talk about discipline,” co-host Brian Kilmeade interjected, “It’s about time we injected some discipline into our classrooms… I agree with you on the issue of social media algorithm websites. I mean, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok which are on the brink of being banned anyway. It’s high time we protected our children in New York from these.”
The contentious law signed by Governor Hochul, dubbed the “SAFE for Kids Act”, is expected to face legal resistance from tech giants. This law targets apps such as TikTok and Instagram that profit from keeping users engaged through algorithms.
Successful implementation of this law could stop social media companies from using algorithms to keep underage users addicted, allow parents to control their children’s notifications during nighttime hours, and prevent these firms from monetizing data generated by young users.
“Our children will not be exploited,” Hochul proclaimed. “We will not let them profit from our kids, our babies, any longer. That is not going to happen here, hence we are the first state to do so.”
Yet, Julie Samuels, President and CEO of NYC has been playing the role of devil’s advocate and warned about unresolved issues that could hinder the effectiveness of the law. She stated, “Lawmakers clearly have good intentions with these bills, but some significant unresolved issues – including how age verification will work, which websites will be impacted, and whether algorithms used to filter out harmful content will be banned – could prevent them from being fulfilled.”
