Dr. Steven Williams, the esteemed president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), courageously voiced his opposition on Monday to the radical idea of conducting sex change procedures on children. In a candid dialogue with “Fox and Friends First” co-host Todd Piro, Williams articulated why the ASPS firmly stands against these surgeries for minors.

Williams elucidated that there are a multitude of procedures encompassed under the umbrella term of “gender-affirming care,” which are intended to help individuals align with their perceived gender identity.

According to Williams, the crux of the issue lies in the absence of evidence endorsing these surgeries for minors. As physicians, they are driven by empirical evidence and genuine compassion for their patients. However, in this rapidly evolving field, there is simply an alarming deficit of evidence to endorse these procedures for adolescents.

Williams also spotlighted the safety concerns surrounding these procedures, and the fact that they are still in development stages. He added that there are potential long-term effects and implications for this susceptible population that need to be thoroughly comprehended.

Williams pointed out that while these surgeries are well-established for adults, the same cannot be confidently stated for adolescents. This is a critical distinction to bear in mind when considering the care provided for this particular age group.

In April of this year, a report was released by the former president of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health in the UK stating that there is “weak evidence” supporting the use of puberty blockers for children. The report also sheds light on potential detrimental effects of these treatments, such as compromising bone density.

In light of these concerns, the UK has wisely issued a ban on the private prescription and supply of puberty blockers for minors. Similarly, a case is being heard by the US Supreme Court regarding a Tennessee law that bans child sex change procedures.
