It’s about time that Jen Psaki, the ex-White House Press Secretary, swallowed her pride and apologized to the Gold Star families. Her defense of President Joe Biden’s disrespectful watch-checking during a ceremony honoring 13 fallen soldiers from the catastrophic Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021 was nothing short of disgraceful. After moving on to host at MSNBC, Psaki faced backlash in May for the false claims she made in her book, “Say More.” She insisted Biden only checked his watch after the ceremony, a claim that was disproven by multiple fact checks carried out in September. This forced her to backtrack on her statement in subsequent reprints, according to sources.
Despite her efforts to dodge the truth, Psaki couldn’t evade it forever. In a recent House Foreign Affairs interview, Republican Florida Rep. Mike Waltz exposed that Psaki had “agreed to apologize” to the 13 Gold Star families she had contradicted in her book. Waltz emphasized that this was not a “partisan or gotcha moment,” but rather an essential step towards doing what is right as fellow Americans. We can only hope that Psaki will indeed make good on her promise to apologize.
During the interview, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul didn’t let Psaki off the hook easily about her false remarks in “Say More.” As reported by the Washington Examiner, he grilled her repeatedly until she finally issued an apology. Leslie Shedd, Foreign Affairs Committee majority spokeswoman, revealed in a statement to the outlet that McCaul asked Psaki if she had anything she wanted to say to the families on record.
After being cornered multiple times, she eventually requested that the chairman convey her apology and express her profound regret for causing pain to these families. McCaul fulfilled this request and passed on her apology to the Gold Star families.
Psaki’s apology was long overdue, and it’s about time she took responsibility for her mistakes and offered a heartfelt apology to the families who lost their loved ones due to Biden’s reckless decision-making. It’s no surprise that Biden’s administration is trying to bury his watch-checking incident, just as he tried to deny the deaths of our troops under his watch during a debate against 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on June 27. But the Gold Star families aren’t fooled. They’ve demanded that Biden take accountability for his actions and honor the fallen soldiers.

While Psaki’s pledge to apologize for misleading Gold Star families on Biden’s behalf may seem like progress, let’s not celebrate too soon. We know all too well that this administration should be held accountable, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
