It is clear that Stephanie Ruhle, host of MSNBC’s The 11th Hour, has chosen to ignore the harsh realities of our border crisis. Instead, she has taken it upon herself to advocate for illegal immigration as a supposed economic booster. This is the same Ruhle who has previously sung praises of our allegedly strong economy and now seeks to push this narrative once more.
The segment kicked off with Ruhle dismissing Republican leaders’ valid concerns over open borders. She brushed off their worries as mere “lies” and falsely asserted that our borders are well-secured. To back her claims, she referred to a report from the Congressional Budget Office which suggests that increased immigration will lead to economic growth and lower deficits in the coming decade. According to her, this is something Republicans would typically support.
Next, Ruhle engaged her guest, Victoria DeFrancesco Soto, dean of the Clinton School of Public Service, in a discussion on whether the Biden administration should use this report to paint illegal immigration in a positive light. Soto responded by claiming that there are countless similar reports, arguing that without immigration, our economy would be cooling down. She also declared that the declining fertility rate in the U.S. is an issue, stating that “every family needs to have two children to replace themselves.”
Soto went on to suggest that we should be more accepting towards those who enter our country illegally. She proposed that instead of viewing them as a problem, we should appreciate their presence and consider it as a means to revitalize our economy.
Ruhle then directed her conversation towards Tim Miller, former communications director for Jeb Bush, questioning if Democrats should exploit this report to alter the narrative on illegal immigration and rally more support for it. Miller responded by suggesting that Democrats should divide Republicans on the issue and make headway. He contrasted Republican rhetoric of “immigration bad” and “the border is open” to Biden’s allegedly more rational approach, claiming that easing border restrictions and welcoming more immigrants would benefit the economy.
Miller ended by expressing his disappointment with the current Republican stance on immigration, questioning where the pro-immigration Republicans have disappeared to. Meanwhile, Ruhle simply nodded in agreement with her guests, blatantly ignoring the potential detriments of illegal immigration.
Yet, there are critical and legitimate reasons to oppose illegal immigration. The Biden administration’s relaxed stance on immigration has triggered a surge in illegal border crossings, posing a serious threat to our national security and public safety. Additionally, illegal immigration strains our resources and often results in American citizens missing out on job opportunities. Not to mention, illegal immigrants frequently evade taxes, burdening law-abiding citizens who fulfill their tax obligations.
Moreover, illegal immigration damages the economy in the long run. By endorsing and promoting illegal immigration, we foster an underground economy that operates outside of regulations and taxes. This leads to lost government revenue and unfair competition for businesses that abide by the rules. It also traps many undocumented workers in a cycle of poverty and exploitation.
Instead of glorifying and encouraging illegal immigration, our focus should be on reforming our immigration policies and implementing effective measures to secure our borders and properly screen those who enter our country. Our priority should be to support and protect American citizens and workers. Only then can we truly have a robust and thriving economy that benefits everyone.
