During an appearance on “The View” this Thursday, Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania criticized the recent conviction of President Donald Trump in a New York court, calling it “politically motivated.” He also slammed his own party for celebrating the conviction and argued that it has damaged Americans’ confidence in their institutions.
Fetterman stated that the case against Trump, in which he was found guilty on 13 counts, was politically motivated and brought about by his political opponents. He also argued that the trial of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, on charges of falsifying information on a gun purchase form and failing to pay taxes, was also politically motivated. Fetterman believes that both of these cases were used as weapons by the Democrats in order to interfere in the 2024 election.
The Senator’s statements came in response to co-host Joy Behar’s argument that Trump would use the same tactic in order to pardon the rioters at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. In a CNN interview in 2023, Trump himself had stated that he would pardon a “large portion” of the rioters if he won reelection. Behar’s argument was that Trump would use the excuse of political motivation in these cases in order to justify pardoning the rioters.
However, Fetterman clarified that he was not referring to the Capitol rioters, but rather the cases against Hunter Biden and Trump. He believes that these cases would never have been brought if their political opponents lacked the ability to weaponize American institutions for their own political benefit. He also criticized his own party for celebrating Trump’s conviction, stating that they were now contradicting their stance on criminal justice and second chances.
Fetterman’s statements highlight the danger of politicization in the American justice system and how it can damage the confidence of the public in their institutions. It also sheds light on the biased and selective use of these institutions by political parties for their own gain. These are concerning issues that need to be addressed in order to ensure a fair and just democracy.
Fetterman’s comments on “The View” highlight the importance of standing against political bias in the justice system. The weaponization of institutions for political gain is a danger to the integrity of our democracy. As the American public, we must demand fairness and impartiality in our institutions and hold our leaders accountable for their actions.
He’s not wrong, it’s just odd coming from Fetterman. Then again, he knows Trump’s back and he’s likely trying to stay in office.
