WATCH: Biden Buries Accusations against Trump as They Meet for Transition Talks

During a White House press briefing on Thursday, CNN reporter MJ Lee pressed press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on the sudden halt of calling President-elect Donald Trump an “existential threat” to democracy after his election win. The CNN reporter pointed to Biden’s previous statements accusing Trump of being a fascist and a threat to democracy, and wondered why Biden has not continued these accusations since he won the election.

Jean-Pierre justified the shift in language by stating that the American people have spoken and the administration is now focused on a peaceful transfer of power. She also emphasized the importance of leading by example and respecting the will of the people. However, she maintained that Biden’s beliefs about Trump being a threat to democracy have not changed.

This sudden change in stance towards Trump is a complete 180 from the previous rhetoric coming from the Biden-Harris administration. Just a month before the election, Jean-Pierre declared Trump as a “fascist” and Biden accused him of being willing to sacrifice democracy for his own gain. Biden even dropped out of the 2024 race in July, citing Trump’s alleged threat to American democracy.

The president’s accusations against Trump continued during the campaign, with Biden stating that Trump is “engaged in rhetoric” that could lead to a “bloodbath” and joking about violence against his opponents. However, after their meeting at the White House on Nov. 13, Jean-Pierre described Trump as being “gracious” and characterized the meeting as “substantive.”

It’s clear that this sudden change in rhetoric is a political move to portray the Biden-Harris administration as being focused on unity and a peaceful transfer of power. However, it begs the question, do they truly believe that Trump is an existential threat or was it just a tool to win the election?

Media outlets, like CNN, have constantly demonized and fearmongered over Trump and his supporters for the past four years. This sudden change in language shows how easily they can flip the narrative to suit their agenda. Rather than questioning the shift in rhetoric, the media seems to be following the administration’s lead in pretending that calling Trump an existential threat was never their intention.
