A caller to C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” show on Wednesday praised the two men who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, saying “they had to step up and take that shot” in order to stop the destruction of America by Trump.
During the show, host John McArdle identified the caller as Willie, a self-proclaimed Democratic Vietnam War veteran. In his statement, Willie expressed his disappointment in Trump’s actions, which he believed were leading to the downfall of the country. “We as military men, we killed, captured, destroyed enemy by all means available,” Willie declared, referencing his own service in the military. “And I see we let this man, Trump, destroy America. And I look at it and say, well, these two people had to step up and take that shot. I’m 83, nothing to lose.”
McArdle appeared taken aback by Willie’s admission and asked him to clarify if he was advocating for violence. Willie responded by saying, “Not violence. I’m talking about defending my country.” However, his words still left a contentious tone in the air as he seemed to suggest that the attempted assassinations of Trump were a justified response to his actions.
This incident comes in the wake of a recent poll by Napolitan News Service, revealing that over a quarter of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters believed that the United States would have been better off if Trump had been killed. This rhetoric has been fueled by members of the Biden administration, who have repeatedly painted Trump as a “threat to democracy.” Even Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has joined in, echoing this theme in her recent statements.
When approached for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation, the Trump campaign provided a statement that pointed fingers at the Biden administration and other Democrats for their divisive language.
“The Rhetoric, Lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC Debate, and all of the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to inflict damage on Joe’s, then Kamala’s, Political Opponent, ME, has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust,” the statement read. “Because of this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and it will only get worse!”
It is alarming to see such extreme and violent sentiments being expressed by individuals, especially towards a former president. While it is important to engage in healthy discussions and debates about political issues, it is never acceptable to condone or advocate for violence. This incident serves as a reminder of the damaging effects of divisive and inflammatory rhetoric and the need for greater unity and understanding.
