President-elect Donald Trump’s deportation plans have already caused a stir among Democrats, who are vowing to resist any immigration laws that may pass under his administration. In an interview on his podcast, Hoover Institute senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson predicted that when Trump follows through with his plans, Democrats will be “weeping and crying” on television.
Hanson believes that Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration will bring a “return to normalcy” and that the left’s reaction will be extreme. He warned listeners to “brace themselves” for the emotional outbursts that will ensue when deportations begin.
“You haven’t seen the left,” Hanson said. “When you start deporting people, even with a criminal record, they’re going to be on CNN weeping and crying. They’re going to be on the internet [saying], ‘This is like Hitler.’ So brace yourself.”
Hanson also predicted that some sanctuary cities may push back against federal penalties for not assisting in the deportation of illegal immigrants, but liberals won’t be able to blame a lack of federal funds for their struggles. He pointed out that infrastructure, such as dangerously neglected freeways, has suffered due to funds being redirected to other projects.
“If you say that a sanctuary city is not going to get [money] — if it insists and it will not get certain types of federal funds [then] people say, ‘Oh, my daughter was killed on the freeway because it wasn’t fixed,’” Hanson explained. “The same left-wing mind that looks over here at High-Speed Rail, this Stonehenge six miles from my house — $15 billion — nothing. There’s the most dangerous freeway in the world parallel to it, the 99.”
For years, California has struggled with dangerous conditions on its highways, with one particular road, Highway 99, earning the nickname “Golden State Highway” due to its high rate of accidents. These issues have only worsened over time, with thousands of people being injured and killed on the freeway due to lack of proper maintenance.
Despite these struggles, California is reportedly already planning to push back against Trump’s immigration policies, with immigrant advocates and officials vowing to fight against any measures that may “tear families apart, destabilize communities, and weaken our economy.” This resistance is already in place, despite Trump not yet officially taking office.
With the tension between Trump and the blue state of California making headlines, it is clear that his deportation plans will continue to be a hot-button issue in the coming months. As deportations begin, it remains to be seen how Democrats will react and attempt to resist Trump’s policies.
