U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts delivered a stern rebuke Sunday to politicians who engage in inflammatory rhetoric against judges, warning that such language could incite violence. Speaking at the Judicial Conference of the Fourth Circuit in Charlotte, North Carolina, Roberts expressed concern over the growing hostility toward the judiciary from both sides of the political aisle.
“I’ve been compelled over the past few years to make statements about people on one side of the aisle – their views on judges – and on the other side,” Roberts said. “It becomes wrapped up in the political dispute that a judge who’s doing his or her job is part of the problem.”
The Chief Justice did not single out any specific individuals, but his remarks come amid a surge in threats against federal judges, including Supreme Court justices. “And the danger, of course, is somebody might pick up on that. And we have had, of course, serious threats of violence and murder of judges just simply for doing their work,” he continued. “So, I think the political people on both sides of the aisle need to keep that in mind.”
While Roberts avoided naming names, the liberal media has been quick to blame conservatives—particularly President Donald Trump—for supposedly inciting hostility toward the judiciary. Yet, the left has been just as guilty, if not more so, in targeting judges with dangerous rhetoric.
Liberal Hypocrisy on Display
Roberts himself condemned Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer in 2020 after Schumer ominously warned Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh that they would “pay the price” for ruling against abortion rights in a Louisiana case. Schumer’s remarks were a blatant intimidation tactic, yet the liberal media downplayed the incident, framing it as mere political passion rather than a genuine threat.
Meanwhile, President Trump has been unfairly vilified for criticizing judicial decisions—a practice as old as American politics itself. When Trump called for the impeachment of Judge James E. Boasberg, who blocked deportation flights to El Salvador, the left erupted in faux outrage. Trump labeled Boasberg a “Radical Left Lunatic of a Judge” and a “troublemaker and agitator”—strong words, but hardly an incitement to violence.
Roberts responded at the time, “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.” Yet, where was this same outrage when Schumer threatened sitting justices?

The Left’s Dangerous Double Standard
The liberal media’s selective outrage is glaring. In 2022, a California man, Nicholas Roske, attempted to assassinate Justice Kavanaugh, showing up at his home armed with a gun, knife, and zip ties. Roske admitted he was enraged over the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade—a cause championed by the left. Where was the media condemnation of the violent rhetoric fueling such extremism?
Instead, Democrats and their allies in the press have spent years demonizing conservative judges, painting them as enemies of democracy. The result? A toxic environment where judges face real danger simply for upholding the law.
President Trump, meanwhile, has consistently supported law and order, including increased security for Supreme Court justices. In 2024, Congress approved $25 million to protect the justices’ homes—a necessary measure thanks to the left’s relentless attacks on the judiciary.
